Work on the Closer Together Whakatata Mai- reducing inequalities (CTWM) information programme continues and we would like to update you on what we have been doing and some of the plans and initiatives for 2012 and beyond.
With the final results from the election confirmed on 10th December, we can now say there is a narrow majority of political parties represented in Parliament that have a commitment to reduce income inequality. In total there are six parties with a total 61 seats out of 121 that are held by parties that have shown support for reducing inequality. Candidates from the Greens, Labour, Māori, NZ First, Mana and United Future all made some form of commitment in the lead up to the election.
Since last week responses from the Māori Party, Labour and Alliance parties have been received. We now have clear commitments from six parties to reduce inequality and candidates from Greens, Mana, Māori, Labour, United Future and Alliance Parties have signed the Closer Together Whakatata Mai - reducing inequalities Political Candidates Choice. We also have a response from Jackie Blue from the National Party giving National's position on inequality.
A couple of weeks ago we wrote to the leaders of all the political parties asking them whether they will encourage their Party members and candidates to show support for reducing income inequality and debate around policies that support reduing the gap between rich and poor.

The arguments for reducing inequality marshalled by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett in The Spirit Level are compelling. But is there anything we can say about the subject from a specifically ‘theological’ perspective?

It is 10am on a Thursday morning, opening time for the team at Down Community Ministry and thier clients are gathering at the entrance, waiting for the doors to open.
